In collaboration with M4 Architects, we realized the modern and functional nursery ‘t Zwalmnestje in Brakel. The design is a simple, sleek pavilion consisting of two shifted building layers. This shift creates an overhang on the south side, which not only provides a covered terrace on the first floor, but also functions as sun protection. A wide recess in the upper level rear façade also provides a sheltered terrace and prevents direct sunlight from entering. From both terraces there are views of the surrounding greenery and the village center of Brakel.
The side facades are minimalist in design, with tall, narrow windows for the sleeping quarters and service rooms. The cladding with red gable tiles, which continues into the ceilings of the terraces, gives the building a lively and inviting appearance despite its clean lines. This choice of materials reinforces the harmony between aesthetics and functionality.
This project focused on combining child-friendliness, functionality and sustainability. The design provides a safe, comfortable and stimulating environment that meets modern building standards and the specific needs of a nursery.
